About the Breed
Meet the Cream Legbar Chicken:
If you dream of a basket filled with sky-blue eggs, the Cream Legbar is your chicken! Famous for their pastel-colored eggs and practical charm, these stylish birds are both beautiful and incredibly useful. With their soft cream-and-gray plumage and quirky little head crests, they’re as fun to watch as they are productive.
All Parcell Farms Cream Legbars originate from a exhibition line, that has been genetically tested and confirmed to have the homozygous blue egg gene. This means ALL their offspring are guaranteed to carry the homozygous blue gene.
History:
Developed at Cambridge University in the 1930s, Cream Legbars were bred for two special traits: colorful eggs and “auto-sexing” chicks. This means that males and females can be identified at hatch by their down color and markings. They quickly became popular for their practicality, beauty, and consistent blue eggs.
Egg Facts:
Cream Legbar hens lay about 180–220 medium to large blue eggs per year. Their egg color ranges from a pale sky-blue to a slightly greenish tint, making every carton look like a springtime surprise. Steady layers, they can keep producing well into the colder months with the right care.
Size & Build:
Cream Legbars are medium-sized chickens, with hens averaging 5–6 lbs and roosters around 7–8 lbs. Their soft cream, gray, and barred feathering gives them a classic yet eye-catching appearance. Many hens sport a small crest of feathers on their head, like a feathery crown, adding extra personality to their look.
Weather Hardiness:
These birds are active and hardy, making them great for free-range flocks:
-
They love to forage and are excellent at finding their own food.
-
Their light builds make them less prone to obesity than heavier breeds.
-
Hardy in most climates, they tolerate both heat and cold with minimal fuss.
Personality:
Cream Legbars are alert, curious, and lively. They aren’t typically lap chickens, but they are friendly and get along well in mixed flocks. With their intelligence and foraging skills, they’re sometimes compared to the “detectives” of the chicken yard—always busy, always exploring.
Why You’ll Love Them:
If you want chickens that are both practical and enchanting, Cream Legbars check every box. They’re productive layers, and add instant color to your egg basket. Smart, stylish, and steady, they’re a wonderful choice for any backyard flock.
