Meet the Olive & Moss Egger Chicken
With their stylish mix-and-match feathers and their signature olive green eggs, Olive Eggers are the backyard chickens you never knew you needed. Part mystery, part magic, and 100% charm, these quirky ladies bring personality and earthy-toned treasures to your egg basket.
History:
Olive Eggers aren’t a standardized breed, but a hybrid created by crossing a dark brown egg-layer with a blue egg-layer. At Parcell Farms, most of our Olive Eggers are F1 (first generation)—a blue-egg gene carrier paired with a Dark Brown Egg Layer. We also work with select multi-generational and backcrossed Olive Egger lines. This deeper genetic pairing enhances the variety of green hues possible—from bright sage to deep moss. Depending on how the blue and brown shell genes combine, it may also produce the occasional brown or brown-tinted egg.
Egg Facts:
Olive Eggers typically lay around 160–200 eggs per year. The real draw? Those rich green shells that look straight out of a storybook. The egg shades can range from pale sage to deep army green—sometimes with a hint of blue or brown in the mix.
Size & Build:
These birds are usually medium to large, with hens weighing around 5.5–7 lbs. Because they’re hybrids, their appearance can vary: feather colors may be black, brown, blue, or even barred, and some have adorable fluffy muffs and beards while others have a sleeker look.
Weather Hardiness:
Olive Eggers are generally hardy and adaptable, thanks to their mixed genetics. Most have pea combs, which are excellent for cold climates, and they do just fine in warmer areas too. All they need is a cozy coop and a bit of shade, and they’re good to go!
Personality:
Friendly, smart, and sometimes a little sassy, Olive Eggers make great additions to flocks of all sizes. They're known for being curious and independent, but many become cuddly with consistent handling. They love to forage, explore, and keep things interesting—so don’t be surprised if they’re always the first to investigate something new.
With their unique looks, vibrant personalities, and gorgeous green eggs, these hybrid hens bring rustic charm and natural beauty to every backyard flock.
Perfect for anyone looking to add natural color, variety, and a little everyday magic to their egg basket.
