Meet the Midnight Legbar
What happens when you combine the striking, all-black beauty of the Ayam Cemani with the practicality and personality of the Cream Legbar? You get the Midnight Legbar—our developing Parcell Farms project designed to bring together dramatic fibro traits, unique egg color, and the convenience of sex-linked characteristics.
History:
The Midnight Legbar is a developing project here at Parcell Farms, created by crossing our Ayam Cemani rooster over Cream Legbar hens. Our goal is to develop a unique line that combines the dark pigmentation and striking appearance of the Ayam Cemani with some of our favorite characteristics of the Cream Legbar.
Because this is an actively developing project rather than a standardized breed, variation is part of the fun! Each generation gives us more information to help us select toward the traits we want to carry forward.
Looks & Build:
Expect dark, dramatic birds with plenty of personality. Midnight Legbars can show varying degrees of fibro pigmentation, with black skin, dark legs, dark feathering, and other traits influenced by their Ayam Cemani parentage. Cream Legbar genetics can also contribute crests, barring, and lighter markings—especially in males.
Since this is a project line, appearance can vary from chick to chick. That means hatching a dozen can feel a little like opening a box of chocolates... except the chocolates have feathers.
Egg Facts:
One of the traits we’re most excited about is the unique egg color potential of this project! With Cream Legbar blue egg genetics combined with the genetics contributed by the Ayam Cemani, we expect Midnight Legbar offspring to lay a beautiful range of greenish-blue eggs.
Because this is still a developing project, exact shades can vary from hen to hen—from cooler blue-green tones to softer greens and everything in between. As we continue developing the line, egg color will be one of the traits we watch and select for in future generations.
That means part of the fun is waiting to see exactly what shade your Midnight Legbar hen adds to the egg basket!
The Really Cool Part:
The Cream Legbar brings sex-linked barring genetics into this cross, creating visible differences between male and female offspring. In our current generation, males can hatch with a lighter head spot and develop barring as they feather, while females remain much darker.
We are continuing to hatch, observe, and select this project as it develops, so chick appearance and the reliability of these characteristics may continue to evolve between generations.
Personality:
With two intelligent, active parent breeds behind them, expect curious birds that enjoy having room to explore. Cream Legbars are known for being alert and excellent foragers, while Ayam Cemani bring their own confident, striking presence to the mix. The result is a bird that is just as interesting to watch as it is beautiful.
So if you love unusual genetics, dark birds, colorful egg baskets, and the excitement of watching a brand-new project develop, the Midnight Legbar might belong in your incubator. They’re mysterious, experimental, and unmistakably different—and we’re incredibly excited to see where this project goes.
Please remember: Midnight Legbars are a developing Parcell Farms project and are not a recognized or standardized breed. Because we are actively selecting and developing this line, offspring may vary in appearance, pigmentation, cresting, barring, egg color, and other characteristics.
