Meet the Rare Indio Gigante- The TALLEST Chicken in the WORLD

With legs like stilts, a proud strut, and a personality as sweet as honey, the Indio Gigante is the supermodel of the chicken worldtall, graceful, and full of charm. These towering birds aren’t just impressive in size—they’re also friendly, curious, and absolutely captivating to have in your flock!

History?

Bred in Brazil in the 1980s, the Indio Gigante (which means “Giant Indian”) was created by crossing large gamefowl breeds like Shamo, Malay, and local Brazilian chickens. The goal? A tall, strong, and docile bird with both ornamental appeal and great utility. Since then, they’ve become famous for their jaw-dropping height and gentle nature.

Size & Build:

Get ready to be amazed—Indio Gigante roosters can reach up to 3.5 feet tall (some even taller), and weigh 10–15 lbs. Hens are smaller but still large, averaging 8–10 lbs. Despite their intimidating size, they’re more friendly dinosaur than fierce fighter—think of them as chicken giraffes with big hearts.

Egg Facts:

Indio Gigante hens are decent layers, producing about 160–200 medium to large light brown eggs per year. They’re not laying machines, but their steady production and dual-purpose use (meat + eggs) make them a great choice for homesteads.

Weather Hardiness:

These birds are tropical natives, so they do best in warm to moderate climates. They can adapt to cooler temperatures if well sheltered, but they’re most comfortable in sunny, dry environments. Give them space to stretch those long legs, and they’ll be happy campers.

Personality:

Don’t let the size fool you—Indio Gigantes are known for being gentle, calm, and friendly. Roosters are generally less aggressive than other large breeds, and hens are sweet and sociable. They do well in mixed flocks, especially when raised with other birds from a young age. They also bond well with humans, often following their people around like loyal, feathered shadows.

So if you’re dreaming of a flock with a little more height, a lot more heart, and plenty of coop-side drama-free elegance, the Indio Gigante is your gentle giant. They’re bold, beautiful, and sure to be the centerpiece of any backyard or homestead—just don’t be surprised when visitors ask, “Is that... a dinosaur?”
