Originating in the port town of Marans, France, this breed was developed in the 19th century by crossing local barnyard birds with game fowl. Over time, they became prized across Europe for their dark, rich eggs—so much so that French chefs still call them the “chocolate egg chicken.” Their popularity quickly spread worldwide, and today, they’re a favorite for both backyard flocks and poultry shows.

French Black Copper Marans are best known for their beautiful, dark chocolate-colored eggs and are among the darkest egg-laying chickens available.
